Dentist Umut Şimşek stated that the teeth known as 20-year-old teeth are actually the third molars and they usually emerge between the ages of 16-21 and said, “According to genetic factors, 20-year-old teeth may not always erupt between these ages. There is no need to pull the wisdom teeth, if they contribute to occlusion and chewing, which has completely erupted in the mouth.
Explaining that in some people, these teeth do not last due to the narrow jaw structure, Dt. Şimşek said, “In the mouth, 20-year-old teeth that have never erupted are considered impacted, and partially erupted teeth are semi-impacted. If it does not cause any problems, there is no need to extract impacted and semi-impacted teeth. However, partially impacted teeth can sometimes cause decay in neighboring teeth. In some cases, they may cause undesirable conditions such as abscess, pain, swelling and difficulty in opening the mouth in the surrounding gingiva. In these cases, patients should apply to their dentists. Semi-impacted wisdom teeth that cause such complaints are usually extracted after antibiotic treatment. It should not be forgotten by the patients that if the complaints are gone after the necessary antibiotic use, similar complaints will recur after a certain period of time if they are not treated.
